Organization Overview
Breach the Surface is a 501(c)3 organization improving ocean literacy through inclusive and equitable marine conservation education. Shockingly, an estimate 35% of United States K-12 youth can’t identify a single ocean-related issue. Since its incorporation in 2020, Breach the Surface has introduced an array of programs that address this ocean literacy gaps while providing educators and youth with free ocean conservation educational resources.
Position Overview
The Internship aims to engage students in marine conservation efforts through an array of research, facilitation, data collection, and media advocacy efforts. Our Marketing/Communications Intern will be managing, overseeing, and developing strategies and content for Breach the Surface media outlets.
Primary Functions
The programs you will be involved with include:
- Creating editorial and content creation calendars for various media platforms and outlets,
- Assisting with the design, negotiation, and placement of traditional media ads on social media and email blasts,
- Producing a brand style guide that best captures the company or client voice and mission,
- Conducting market research to determine a target audience needs, wants, habits, interests and other relevant factors used in creating targeted marketing campaigns,
- Researching previous successful campaigns to understand what worked, what didn’t and what can be improved,
- Reviewing the progress and success of a campaign, making adjustments, or pitching ideas for new campaigns as necessary,
- Collaborate with other departments and interns to plan marketing campaigns,
- Shellphone podcast pre/post-production help including drafting scripts, creating reels, and joining in on studio days,
Additional programs interns could be involved with include:
- Co-facilitate educational programs and lesson plans for local school groups and clubs,
- Facilitate virtual webinars,
- Participate in local cleanups with Tampa/ St. Petersburg-based organizations as a data analysis,
- Policy/advocacy work including joining local coalition calls etc…
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications:
- Willingness to learn and educate others.
- Experience in marketing is a plus for this position.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills in person, on the phone, and in writing.
- Knowledge in environmental sciences (especially marine) is a plus.
- A commitment of 6-12 hours per week.
- A strong commitment to marine conservation.
Term of Employment: 14-16 weeks
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship (travel expenses may be compensated)
Other: Intern, must supply their own computer and internet access.
Location: This is a virtual position.

Position Overview
The Internship aims to engage students in marine conservation efforts through an array of research, facilitation, and digital efforts. Our 2023 Ocean Programs Intern will assist in managing current programs and partners. The current ongoing programs the intern may help oversee can be found at breachthesurface.org/programs. The Programs Inter should also be ready to engage at tabling and canvasing events.
Primary Functions
The programs you will be involved with include:
- Program development and improvement,
- Conduct in-depth research to both identify prospective funding partners and strengthen our proposals,
- Right-hand to the executive director to ensure programs run smoothly,
- Support with the development of marketing strategies, including supporting toolkits,
- Support with writing and proofreading concept notes, proposals, and reports for donors,
- Support with data collection and analysis to better our programs,
- Interact with current and potential grantors and partners.
Additional programs interns could be involved with include:
- Co-facilitate educational programs and lesson plans for local school groups and clubs,
- Facilitate virtual webinars,
- Participate in local cleanups with Tampa/ St. Petersburg-based organizations as a data analysis,
- Policy/advocacy work including joining local coalition calls etc…
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications:
- Willingness to learn and educate others.
- Knowledge in partnerships, business development, and/or NGO development is a plus,
- Strong interpersonal communication skills in person, on the phone, and in writing.
- Knowledge of environmental sciences (especially marine) is a plus.
- Be able to perform outdoors, sometimes under direct sunlight or light rain.
- Lift heavy objects as needed including tents, bi-fold tables, full litter bags, and other cleanup supplies (you will always have a buddy to help you).
- A commitment of 6-12 hours per week.
- A strong commitment to marine conservation.
Term of Employment: 14-16 weeks

Position Overview
Our student-led podcast Shellphone is looking for a Podcast Production Intern! In this role the intern will gain real industry experience while working with editors, our student hosts, and guests in a podcast studio environment to produce captivating episodes. The Podcast Production Intern will work on all pre and post-production phases of the podcast alongside our leadership team.
Primary Functions
The programs you will be involved with include:
- Podcast pre/post-production for our podcast Shellphone. Manage guest speakers, draft scripts, and come along as we record podcasts at our studio space in Coastal Creative,
- Conduct in-depth research to both identify prospective sponsorship opportunities and guests with specific interest in Breach the Surface work,
- Support with development of the podcast, including supporting toolkits,
- Support with writing and proofreading concept scripts, proposals, and reports,
- Support with data and stats to improve reach and views,
- Interact with current and potential guests and partners,
- Support with Shellphone fundraising efforts and goals.
Additional programs all inters may be involved with include:
- Co-facilitate educational programs and lesson plans for local school groups and clubs,
- Facilitate virtual webinars,
- Participate in local cleanups with Tampa/ St. Petersburg-based organizations as a data analysis,
- Policy/advocacy work including joining local coalition calls etc…
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications:
- Willingness to learn and educate others,
- Knowledge of in-studio work and set-up is a plus,
- Previous work with video, audio editing, and software is a plus,
- Strong interpersonal communication skills in person, on the phone, and in writing,
- Knowledge in environmental sciences (especially marine) is a plus,
- Be able to perform outdoors, sometimes under direct sunlight or light rain,
- Lift heavy objects as needed including lights, cameras, tri-folds, and other media supplies (you will always have a buddy to help you),
- A commitment of 6-12 hours per week,
- A strong commitment to marine conservation.
Term of Employment: 14-16 weeks
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship (travel expenses may be compensated).
Other: Intern, must supply their own computer and internet access.
Location: This is a hybrid position and may involve travel with St. Petersburg, Fl.

Board Member Application

Since its incorporation in 2020, Breach the Surface has introduced an array of programs that address this ocean literacy gaps while providing educators and youth with free ocean conservation educational resources.
Ideal Candidate
This individual has a special place in their heart for marine life and conservation. They believe that the expansion of marine knowledge and education will serve as the backbone for long-lasting conservation of our marine environments. This member also has a background in nonprofit professional development, ranging from bookkeeping, operations, corporate law, and/or nonprofit management, or a background in marine/environment conservation (land or sea). Breach programs are mainly digital and allow us to focus on creating inclusive and equitable programming, all while staying relevant as the world pushes new advancements in technology and education.
Commitments
Attendance and Participation:
Regularly attend and actively participate in quarterly board meetings: March, June, September, and December.
1:1 monthly check-in meeting with Executive Director.
Participate in special fundraising events.
4-6 hour commitment per/week.
Mission Alignment:
Understand and support the nonprofit’s mission, vision, and values.
Serve as an ambassador for the organization in the community.
Financial Oversight:
Ensure the organization has adequate resources and is financially sound.
Approve and monitor the annual budget and financial reports.
Fundraising:
Participate in fundraising activities and contribute personally to the organization.
Leverage personal and professional networks to support the nonprofit’s fundraising efforts.
Governance:
Ensure the organization complies with legal and ethical standards.
Participate in the development and implementation of strategic plans.
Advocacy and Outreach:
Advocate for the organization’s cause and programs.
Engage with stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, and the community.
Policy and Decision-Making:
Participate in setting and reviewing policies that guide the organization.
Make informed decisions in the best interest of the nonprofit.
Confidentiality and Integrity:
Maintain confidentiality about sensitive matters discussed in board meetings.
Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential conflicts promptly.
Evaluation and Improvement:
Participate in board self-evaluation and ongoing education.
Commit to continuous improvement of board performance.
Support and Supervision:
Support the staff and volunteers, recognizing their efforts and contributions.
Provide guidance and oversight to ensure effective and ethical management.
